We’ll also bring back a very moving story from a woman who was a victim of human trafficking from an early age.  She talked to Shawn about how she has arisen from the abuse to open a community coffee shop – as well as help others and bring awareness to human trafficking. Putting clues together to solve who committed a crime is a difficult task.  We’ll see an encore of Helena’s interview with a crime scene investigator who gave her some insight into his challenging career.

She found her niche as a School Resource Officer. Then, we’ll give you an encore of her interview with a head volleyball coach, where she learned that coaching involves a lot more than teaching volleyball skills. Then it’s back to the classroom where she saw how an elementary school teacher can make a big difference in her pupil’s lives.

We’ll start by revisiting Shawn’s interview with a sound designer. You’ll hear how he integrates music, sound and effects into films, TV and plays. It makes a world of difference in the finished production! Or perhaps the sight of pesky critters above the surface intrigues you.  We’ll learn about a career in pest control.

Shawn spent a day at the University of Central Florida’s Institute of Simulation and Training.   Simulators can be used for almost every type of situation… from preparing soldiers to go into combat… to training teachers and nurses… to improving driver and piloting skills. The staff and students at UCF’s I S T are involved in researching how simulation can be improved upon and made even more real. Shawn was surprised to find that teams of all sorts of people work together on simulation research. Whether you’re interested in psychology… graphic arts… acting… engineering… history… computers… or architecture, to name a few. There’s something for just about everyone in this research field! We’ll visit the RAPTER group, the Robotics lab and the Media Convergence Lab.

First up, Shawn will talk to a man who co-founded the Orlando Magic and is currently their Senior Vice President. He has a few tips to share with us. We’ll also get a glimpse into what it takes to put a TV show or commercial together when we meet the senior editor of a video production company. And then Shawn’s going to visit a physician who uses a form of medicine that’s dates back 5,000 years.  It’s called acupuncture and involves the use of needles to treat conditions.

First up we’ll go out on a call with animal control specialist Crystal Keele to find out what type of “vermin” is living in her client’s attic. You read that right; THIS animal trapper is a female! Also on our schedule is a chance to look in on Carley and Luis as they pursue their latest career opportunity in television. This time, however, it’s not in FRONT of the camera but instead, they will be talking with John Keyes who is in charge of making program decisions at a local television station! And then, we’ll explore the medical field when we meet Dr. David Molthrop, a Medical Oncologist. Oncology is the medical specialty dealing with the study and treatment of cancer.

Carley will talk with Dr. Barry Levin, an orthodontist. He is the one to go to for straight teeth and a beautiful smile. Then we’ll follow Luis through a crime scene lab. You definitely don’t want to miss this interview with Eric Brothers, a Forensic Analyst. Finally we’ll visit with Dr. Michael Porter, a veterinarian who specializes in large animals. He sees most of his patients in their own environment, so we’ll catch up with him on the job – at a horse stable.

Also on tap is a visit to the call center where 911 emergency phone calls are handled.

Carley meets a Rabbi who has a very unusual hobby that you won’t believe. Then Luis is off to the hospital to check in with a student nurse and learn about the training she is going through to fulfill her dream of becoming a nurse. And finally Luis will catch up with a pair of dynamic young women who will give us a look at marketing, public relations and business development as it applies in their daily jobs.

We are going on location with Luis and a deputy sheriff for a demonstration from the K-9 unit and learn more about this division of the sheriff’s department. We’ll go behind the scenes with Carley and talk with a Director of Broadcast Production to find out what has to be done before you hear the Director yell . . . action! Most of us might know what an architect does, but what do you know about an Architectural Engineer? Carley will fill you in on the differences between these two interesting occupations.

Wakeboarding is one of the more popular water sports today and Carley has landed an interview with professional wakeboarder, Phillip Sovern. On the last episode of Real Life 101 we learned about architectural engineering. Today we’ll gain some insight into that of an Electrical Engineer with Luis. And then Carley will wrap things up with a workout and an interview with a Jazzercise Instructor.

We are going to find out about the world of publishing when Carley talks to a magazine editor. Then Luis will be stopping in at a video post-production facility to gain some knowledge about video editing. And then our girl Carley gets lost. Yes, that’s right… fortunately she isn’t lost for long as a volunteer Search & Rescue team comes to her aid.

We are going with Luis to take a look at what it takes to be a director of news for a local television station. Carley will take with the head of an entertainment design company. The projects they work on are truly awesome! And finally Luis is off to a doctor’s office. No, fortunately he’s not sick but he will be talking with a PA . . . or Physician’s Assistant in a surgeon’s office.

Advertising is one career path that interests many students. Carley talks to an advertising executive to see what qualifications are needed for this interesting profession. And then we’ll talk with two students who served as summer interns to further their career goals. You’ll want to hear what they have to say.

In this episode, we’ll introduce you to an attorney who will provide us with some insight into this much sought-after career. We will then take you to the office of a surgeon to learn about her area of specialty. She has a story that will inspire you to reach for the stars. You’ll want to watch to find out more about this profession in our first segment. Or are you a person who enjoys being in the limelight, and impressing others with your bravery? Do you like large reptiles? Our second profession might be perfect for you. Luis introduces us to a man who has a career wrestling alligators! Finally, if you’re interested in detective work and keeping people honest, you might consider a job Carley introduces us to as a theft prevention consultant. It can save us all money in the long run as retail prices go up to cover losses from theft.

Luis finds himself in the front seat of a Mercedes resisting the sales expertise of the sales person. Then, Carley meets with a massage therapist and learns some of the techniques used to really relax people and relieve them of their aches and pains. Afterwards, she sits down with a director of catering from a country club and secretly dreams about the time she might need her services for her big day.

Today, we’re going to visit Gatorland, a park for not only alligators but hundreds of other wildlife. There, we will meet with the zookeeper who has the challenging job of taking care of the animals. Then, we’ll take you to a funeral home and talk to the director who’ll let us know what is involved in handling funeral and burial arrangements for families’ deceased members. On a lighter note, we’ll visit a country club and find out the skills it takes to keep the club running smoothly.

We’re going to revisit New Orleans to look at three occupations. The segments were shot right before Hurricane Katrina devastated the area.  We’re going to show you the interviews and update you on how the people and businesses are doing now. First, we’re going to feature a visit with a doctor who cares for very sick newborns at the Ochsner Clinic in New Orleans.  Next, we’ll take you to the famed Galatoire’s and meet up with a waiter who works at this wonderful restaurant.  Then, we’ll show you a special school where you’ll meet a man dedicated to keeping kids drug-free and off the streets.

Today, we’re going to start out with a very demanding career that only a select few get chosen for.  You’ll want to watch as Luis talks with a man who works for the FBI. Then, he’ll meet up with a Human Resource Manager.  We’ll find out about her job and how she works with employees from hiring to firing.  You’ll also get some tips on being prepared for a job interview… and how to increase your chances of being hired. Finally, we’ll recall another one of Luis’ favorite interviews from last year.  He had way too much fun in the simulator with a Jet Blue pilot and begged us to show it again!

If so, you’ll love our first segment.  It comes straight at us from the FBI.  It’s directed to all of us girls and will introduce us to the challenging career of serving our country as a Special Agent. Join us as Real Life 101 Goes Cruising. Today, we’re going to devote the entire show to jobs in the cruise industry!  Carley recently spent a day on a Royal Caribbean ship and learned about what it’s like to work on a luxury liner.  Today, we’re going to see her join the Captain on the ship’s bridge and learn what it takes to be the master of the vessel and how it operates.  Then she’ll visit with the Hotel Director, who will talk to her about the many other departments of the ship.  And finally, she’ll chat with the Cruise Director and hear how he coordinates all the fun and entertainment on the ship.

Do you ever wonder who chooses the music or topics you hear on the radio?  Well, today, we’re going find out as Luis takes us behind the scenes at a radio station where he chats with the Program Director. Then, we’ll visit with a lady who helps injured or handicapped children perform everyday tasks.  Carley sat down with a Pediatric Occupational Therapist and learned a bit about her profession. And last, but not least, will see Luis reclining in the dental chair as he finds out about becoming a dentist. We had to promise him that the dentist wouldn’t start drilling!

Have you ever thought about how a newspaper can print tens or even hundreds of thousands of newspapers in just a short amount of time?  We’re going to take you to a printing press room where Carley will meet with a press operator and find out. Then, we’ll learn some of the secrets of how hotels figure out the different pricing on their rooms.  As you’ll find out in our second segment, this is no accident… a lot of careful analysis goes into the job. And finally, we’ll show you how different TV and theatre characters are produced with the creative strokes of a special effects makeup artist.  You won’t want to miss what she does with Carley!

We’ll also visit a home that is being painted by a man who started from scratch as a painter.  He’ll tell us what it took to build his business.

Today we’re going to introduce you to a Breaking News Editor who will discuss how he oversees delivering news almost immediately to the paper’s internet site. We’re also going to take you to meet a Victims Services Advocate from Safe House, an organization whose mission it is to end domestic violence.  You’ll also learn how you can get help for yourself or someone you know living in an abusive situation.Then, we’ll visit the studio of an artist who finds peace and solitude in his career. . . creating award winning art with the simple stroke of a pencil.

We’re devoting our entire show to working in the newspaper industry. We’ll learn how this business is keeping up with our changing technology by not only delivering our news the traditional way but also focusing on getting information out through the internet.  A staff writer will tell us how he keeps up with the hectic pace of reporting the news. We’ll also learn about careers available in the industry from a Human Resources manager. We’ll get a lesson on being money smart from a Financial Planner and learn about the tools he uses for keeping people financially secure.  Then we’ll meet a Pediatric Physical Therapist and find out how she helps children with different disabilities and injuries develop and heal. Finally, we’ll meet a Professional Organizer who can help us get the clutter out of our lives and spend less time searching for lost items.

Today, we’re taking a field trip… Real Life is going to college!  We’re not talking about just any college… we’re going to the University of Florida, the home of the National football and basketball champions, the Florida Gators! We’ll be taken on a tour of part of the 2,000 acre campus.  Luis will learn what life is like living away from home at Florida’s oldest and largest university.  Then we’ll talk to an admissions counselor to find out what you need to be doing now to get into college in the next few years. We’ll also get a glimpse into the operations of the student government and how it serves the needs of the school when we meet the Student Body President.

We’re going to continue our field trip to one of the country’s most academically diverse universities, the University of Florida.  We’ll pick up by meeting a student athlete who is swimming her way through her 4 years at Florida. She’ll tell us what it’s like to be actively involved in a college sports program. When you start college, you’ll be faced with the decision of whether you want to join a fraternity or sorority.  We’ll talk to a fraternity President and get a glimpse into the “Greek” side of college. Are you considering becoming a doctor?  The University has a great medical program.  We’ll meet a medical student and learn about the challenges she faces in school.

We’ll meet with a man who’s made a profession out of his love of photography, especially making people look good for portraits and head shots. Then, we’ll visit a dance clothing and accessory boutique where you can even rent costumes worn by the contestants from the TV show, Dancing with the Stars. For those of you into sports – and writing, we’ll let you in on a way to get up close and personal with your favorite sports teams and make a living!

First, Luis is going to sit down with a Chief Engineer for a hotel.  I never even knew hotels had engineers – can you guess what they do? Then we’ll meet a dietician who makes up a special diet for kids with seizures that helps them go seizure-free. Finally, we’ll talk to a couple of librarians who will let us know how their duties have evolved over the years.

The entire show is being devoted to careers in the hotel industry.  It takes many people working together as a team to have a hotel that meets people’s expectations and makes them feel at home whether they’re staying for business or pleasure. Today, we’ll talk to the General Manager who overseas the entire operation of the facility of a hotel.  We’ll also meet with the person responsible for maintaining and keeping the rooms clean, the Director of Housekeeping.  Plus, we’ll meet with the person in charge of booking meeting and banquet functions on the property, the Director of Sales and Marketing.

First we’ll meet a chaplain who works in a hospital bringing peace and comfort to patients and their families. For those of you interested in criminal justice, we’ll meet a man who is the Chief Probation Officer in a federal court and learn about the probation system. And finally, we’ll visit a nursing home and see how an activities director and her dog keep the patients occupied and enjoying life.

We’re going to meet a Real Estate Attorney who has balanced his career with his passion for helping others in the small African country of Namibia.  We’ll also visit with the controller for a Sheraton Hotel.  He’ll introduce us to how he crunches numbers for financial reports. Then it’s off to the cruise ship again as we meet a young man who entertains the guests with his talented voice.  He’ll even sing us a little tune – a cappella!

We’ll speak with a mortgage banker and find out what’s involved in getting a loan so a person can move into the home of their dreams.  In our stressful world, a lot of people have trouble coping with different issues. We’ll speak with a mental health counselor and see how she helps her clients get through life.
